ADCP data format

Posted by Sean Murphy at June 26. 2011

Hi,

I am being provided with a data file from a vessel using a Nortek ADCP. The file is an ASCII log recording a sample of data every few minutes, the file header and first data sample are below

% Date, Time, Latitude, Longitude, East, North,VesSpd,VesCrs,VesHdg,VE-001,VN-001,VU-001,Vel001,Dir001

05/20/2011, 00:13:04.00, 54.776687, 5.035984, 322756.7, 6086785.5, 1.95, 269.7, 265.5, 0.09, -0.15, -0.13, 0.17, 150.5,

(there are 20 depth cells but I've only inclouded header for one here).

My questions are:-

Is the Vel001 data field always in metres per second, or some other unit of speed

Is the data field Dir001 relative to true north, or is it vessel relative. ie. in this data sample is this a current travelling towardrs 150 degrees, or is it travelling toowards 150 degrees plus vessel heading of 265 degrees.

thanks

Sean

Hi Sean,

Vel001 is meters per second while Dir001 is relative to north not the Vessel.

Best regards
