Issue with probe check?

Posted by ARN at June 12. 2011

Hello,

We use a Nortek Vector in our lab, and are preparing for a deployment this summer. I was carrying out the vector probe check, both in air and

water, and compared it to the 'expected' probe checks, as given in the manual. There seem to be slight discrepancies, and I was wondering if

there was a problem with the Vector itself. The test was carried out in a bucket which had about 18 inches of water, with the probe submerged under water.

There was a lot of dirt added to the water as well. What I see is that the probe check does not show the 'transmit pulse', and the Amplitude of the area around the measurement volume is about 200 counts.

I have attached the probe check snapshots, any inputs on this would be really helpful!

Thanks,

ARN

Here is the ADV probe check in air.

A probe check in air will not be very useful.

I would try using a deeper bucket. It looks like you are getting a lot of interference from the boundary. The 200 counts you mention is the actual boundary (not very sharply defined) and not the sample volume. The sample volume should be centered around 150 mm.

Otherwise, I don't see anything wrong that shouldn't be corrected by using a little larger (and deeper bucket).

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the information, I used a slightly deeper bucket and immediately got 2 peaks, which looks better.

However, can you let me know as to why I still do not see the 'transmit pulse' part as mentioned in the manual?

I understand that you say it is not an issue, but I was wondering why it was so.

Thanks again!

The peak around 25 mm (far left) is the transmit pulse.

Thanks for your response Peter. I misunderstood that peak to be the one produced by 'shifting electronics'.

I am glad that the probe check shows no issues with the Vector.
